FPGA Engineer: Come Build Really Cool Shit With Us

We love FPGAs. That's basically why MicroNova exists. We're a small team of engineers who genuinely enjoy building embedded systems. MicroNova was founded in 2012 by a group of friends because this is the kind of work we wanted to do, and somehow we've been fortunate enough to turn that into a company where FPGAs and high-performance embedded systems are pretty much all we do. Our customers call us when they have a difficult new problem: move a ton of data, move it fast, process it in real time, and make the whole thing actually work. We work on R&D and new product development across space, defense, test & measurement, audio, industrial systems and other interesting industries. We're generally not maintaining somebody's 15-year-old design or making revision 37 of the same product. Most of our projects start with a new problem and a relatively blank sheet of paper. If that's the kind of engineering you enjoy, you'll probably like it here. What you'll actually build: Our typical system starts with an AMD/Xilinx FPGA or SoC: Zynq-7000, Zynq UltraScale+ or Versal, connected to sensors, converters, cameras, RF hardware, high-speed interfaces or other devices producing lots of data. You'll design FPGA logic in VHDL/Verilog to ingest, move and process that data, generally interfacing with C++/Python software running bare-metal, under FreeRTOS/Zephyr, or Linux. Depending on the project, you might be working with: PCIe, JESD204, Ethernet AXI and custom FPGA IP SPI, I2C, UART, USB and SD VHDL/Verilog simulation and testbenches VUnit/cocotb Embedded Linux and PetaLinux/Yocto C / C++ / Python You do not need to know everything on this list. We'd much rather hire an excellent engineer who understands digital design and loves figuring things out than someone who checks every keyword on a résumé. What's different about working here? We're engineers, not a giant corporation pretending to be an engineering company. MicroNova has very little bureaucracy, a flat organization and relatively few meetings. You aren't going to spend half your week preparing PowerPoints about the engineering you could have been doing. You'll work directly with the other engineers building the system. You'll have meaningful input into architecture and design decisions. We work across multiple customers and industries, so you're unlikely to spend the next five years staring at one tiny piece of one enormous program. Our culture is collaborative and informal. A lot of us are here because we genuinely like this stuff. We talk about FPGAs, embedded systems and electronics even when nobody is paying us to. If you've ever built some ridiculous electronics project at home just because you wanted to see if you could make it work, you're probably our kind of person. Who we're looking for We're looking for an experienced FPGA engineer who can take ownership of real designs and enjoys solving difficult technical problems. You should have meaningful experience with VHDL and/or Verilog and FPGA development. AMD/Xilinx experience is particularly useful, but experience with Intel/Altera or other FPGA families absolutely counts. Experience with embedded firmware is a big plus, especially if you're comfortable crossing the hardware/software boundary. Most importantly, we want someone who is curious, technically strong, easy to work with, and genuinely enjoys engineering. The good stuff Flexible working hours and potential for hybrid work.
